In India, noted the most expressive and colorful Spring Festival – a holiday Holy (Holi).
Holi (Hindi: होली) is a popular, Hindu spring festival, observed in Enitire India and Nepal, also called the Festival of Colours. In West Bengal, it is known as Dolyatra (Doljatra) or Boshonto Utsav (“spring festival”).

-
On the first day, bonfires are lit at night to signify burning the demoness Holika, Hiranyakashipu’s sister.
-
On the second day, known as Dhulhendi, people spend the day throwing coloured powder and water at each other. The spring season, during which the weather changes, is believed to cause viral fever and cold. Thus, the playful throwing of the coloured powders has a medicinal significance: the colours are traditionally made of Neem, Kumkum, Haldi, Bilva, and other medicinal herbs prescribed by Āyurvedic doctors. A special drink called thandai is prepared, sometimes containing bhang (Cannabis sativa). People invite each other to their houses for feasts and celebrations later in the evening.

this is a pointless tradition, I would hate to get any kind of colored water on me. its gros.
this is my opion.
plus, this whole religion is dumb, there is no facts that ANY of it is true
again this my my opion.
except for the religion part, that is true
(:
peter,
followers of hindu religion(on of the oldest in the world) do not waste time on finding out facts which would ‘prove’ what their scriptures say. If today we dnt have proof of christian religion how cn we question a religion which is thousands of years older than christ???
however, the point is, that hindu religion and its festivals always have an underlying message which becomes even more important in today’s world. the festival of holi brings color n joy to the lives of people who are so busy otherwise that having one meal together even in a family is rare. this festival brings people close.one leaves aside all gridges and tension to smear color on and hug the other person. such is the spirit of holi.
n if u have time, try reading about the story behind this festival. u wil get to kno that the festival of holi also marks ‘triumph of good over evil’.
in my opinion, peter, next time u write something on a public forum, make sure that ur personal opinion is based on better reading and understanding of ur topic of comment. calling a religon which even today forms ‘modern study’ for science, management, and philosophy as ‘dumb’ is by far the most inesensitive n worthless comment i have come across.
however, in the spirit of ‘holi’, i hope this festval adds color and happiness to the lives of you and all your loved ones. wich u a very a very happy holi!
This sounds like such a fun celebration! Can’t wait until I save up enough money to go to india for holi! Sorry Peter, but I agree with Somya. Besides, not wanting to get covered in water and colours? Where is your sense of fun!? Can’t wait until march 1 2010 because hopefully I will be in India for HOLI!
Hey i cannot pronounce the festival Holi but ned to know soon can anybody help me out?
